Of all the ICF competencies, the Coaching Mindset (2) is the most difficult to measure, because it is the sense of how well the coach embodies the values, beliefs and perspective of a coach. The coach’s mindset will impact every question they ask, the body language and tone they use in response to the client language, and the way they open and close a session. But how does one improve a coaching mindset?
In my experience as a trainer, the most helpful way to refine our mindset is to reflect on our work together. Because of this, our live session this week may feel very familiar to a group mentor coaching session. However, instead of the trainer being the mentor coach, each participant is expected to provide measurable feedback and meaningful insight to one another’s work.

ACC, PCC and MCC Competency and Markers Distinctions
Please review the following document to better grasp the ICF’s perspective of their competencies, the markers of success an ICF assessor expects to see in a recorded session and the distinctions between the ACC, PCC and MCC levels. The goal of reviewing this document is to become more familiar with the ICF’s definition of the Coaching Mindset, so please do not focus on memorizing the information. Rather, take note of elements that stand out to you as areas of interest, improvement or discussion.
