Definition of Coaching and Powerful Questioning 101
Welcome to the first session of Corporate Sponsored Coach Training. Because our live sessions are focused on discussion and practice, throughout the program, it will be very important to review the training content in preparation for each session. Important to note: this first week’s content is longer than the following weeks. With this in mind, please review the following content to prepare for our first live session.
Live Session Details
The time and date and session outline of our first live session can be found in your class syllabus. If you need support before our first session, feel free to reach out to bryan@corporatecoach.training.
Session Content: Review Before Class
An Overview of the Ethics of the Coaching Partnership
The ethics of coaching are to be woven throughout the entire client experience as they work with their coach. Next session we will explore the International Coach Federation’s Code of Ethics, but for now, consider the ICF’s first Core Competency: Demonstrates Ethical Practice:

1. Demonstrates personal integrity and honesty in interactions with clients, sponsors and relevant stakeholders
2. Is sensitive to clients’ identity, environment, experiences, values and beliefs
3. Uses language appropriate and respectful to clients, sponsors and relevant stakeholders
4. Abides by the ICF Code of Ethics and upholds the Core Values
5. Maintains confidentiality with client information per stakeholder agreements and pertinent laws
6. Maintains the distinctions between coaching, consulting, psychotherapy and other support professions
7. Refers clients to other support professionals, as appropriate

As you review this overview of coaching ethics, consider how important our language is. How are we describing coaching in comparison to other domains? How are we using our language in a way that demonstrates respect while honoring the relationships between our clients, their sponsors and other stakeholders (from co-workers, leaders and even friends and family members). Also note the importance of clearly articulating the difference between coaching and therapy. This will be discussed in more detail during our live sessions, but the ability to understand the difference between coaching and other supporting professions is critical so that we uphold the space of coaching while making sure clients receive the right support for where they are in their journey.
Come prepared to this session to discuss any thoughts or questions you have about this overview of the ICF’s view of ethical coaching. Throughout our work we will explore the Code of Ethics and Core Values in the pre-session materials and in the live-session discussions.
